BudapestMTK Stadium

The new MTK Stadium was, in many respects, the first of its kind, not only in Hungary, but also Europe. This was the first instance that full LED-lighting and hybrid turf were being used in Hungary and the benches aren’t located at the side of the field, but in the first row of the stand.

In nearly 350 days, the New MTK Stadium was built before the deadline. During the entire investment, 86 machines, 4 tower cranes, 13 mobile cranes, and approximately 2,500 people were employed on the project. For the 5,300-seat complex, 1160 tons of reinforced steel and 13,000 m3 of concrete were used. The roof structure was made of 225 tons of steel. For the 214 pieces of LED lights, and for the building’s wiring, a total of 150 km of cable was used. The stadium has 535 bicycle parking spaces, 193 parking spaces, athletes, office, press and operational areas, a brasserie, Memorial sector, and a fan shop. Thanks to the innovative, technical and design solutions the facility stands out among the home stadiums.

The essence of the hybrid lawn is that, between the natural turf, 20 million plastic fibres were installed. In Europe, besides the MTK stadium, we can find a playing field of this kind at Anfield Road in Liverpool, Old Trafford, Manchester, and Giuseppe Meazza in Milan. The lighting is also special, as in Europe, there are only three stadiums where the full lighting of the playing field is ensured by LED-lighting. In Europe, besides the MTK stadium, only the Emirates Stadium has both of these innovative solutions. In addition, on the building’s southern roof, a solar panel system with a total capacity of 50 KW was installed.

Applying new solutions for the first time is never easy, especially if it is made more difficult by a limited implementation area (the proximity of Sport Street, the BKV site, and the tram line). In the construction industry, these circumstances can pose such obstacles that only a few of the large domestic companies can carry out this kind of job in the expected quality and before deadline. The client and the contractor, the ZÁÉV-WHB consortium, working as a team, successfully overcame the obstacles, the requested deadline has been met, and in this way, the MTK Budapest-Sporting C.P. football match could take place on 13 October.
