The comprehensive renovation of the Benedictine complex in Győr is one of the most significant historic preservation and educational development projects currently underway in Győr. The goal of the project is to ensure that the Benedictine High School, the church, and the monastery buildings preserve their centuries-old heritage while also meeting the demands of the 21st century. The primary task was the complete replacement of the windows and doors on the high school’s facade, with particular attention paid to preserving its historic value. The church’s 400-year-old roof structure was dismantled and replaced with a new, modern roof, designed to match the original timber framework but equipped with insulation that meets today’s energy efficiency standards. The roofs on all three wings of the monastery were also renovated, and spaces open to visitors were created in the attic, allowing the general public to get closer to the Benedictine heritage. The roof structure of the chapel designed by Imre Makovecz has also been renovated, and the western wing of the monastery has been completed to a turnkey standard.
During the renovation, great emphasis was placed on preserving and restoring historical details, frescoes, and original flooring, while at the same time modernizing the mechanical and electrical systems and renovating the common areas. A key goal was to create an inspiring, modern learning environment for high school students and teachers that still pays respectful homage to the Benedictine spirit. The church’s new roof structure not only helps preserve the building’s integrity but also aesthetically revitalizes it.
Every material used in the project was selected to preserve the building’s historic character over the long term, while enabling energy-efficient and sustainable operation. With the renovation of the building complex, downtown Győr has gained a new community center. The development also facilitates the hosting of cultural events, exhibitions, and school activities. The project is the result of purposeful collaboration between the municipality, the city, experts, and the local community. With the opening of the new spaces, an increasing number of visitors can discover the spiritual and historical heritage of the Benedictines. As part of the renovation, state-of-the-art fire protection and security systems were also installed in the building complex. The project placed great emphasis on accessibility, making it easier for people with limited mobility to use the facility. In addition to its religious and community functions, the site’s significance for tourism has also grown, as the renovated church, monastery, and high school are all popular attractions. The development has contributed to the preservation of the city’s architectural heritage, the revitalization of community life, and the strengthening of intergenerational ties. The combination of modernization and respect for tradition sets an example for other historic preservation projects. Today, the Benedictine complex in Győr once again occupies a worthy place in the heart of the city, serving as a living reminder of the harmony between past and present.
