Bodajki Hunting Lodge

The Bodajk hunting lodge, once the luxurious residence of the Hochburg–Lamberg family, lay hidden in the heart of the town for many decades, neglected and unappreciated. Originally built in the Classical style, the building was considered one of the region’s most significant historical monuments due to its ornate façade, elegant interiors, and rich historical past. Over the past centuries, however, the castle’s condition gradually deteriorated: its roof structure leaked, its plaster crumbled, its doors and windows fell into disrepair, and its decorative elements were severely damaged. The once-grand halls lost their original splendor, the park became overgrown, and the building ceased to serve any purpose. Before the renovation, the castle was closed to visitors and had been completely excluded from community life. The goal of the reconstruction was to enable the former aristocratic hunting lodge to once again serve as a community, cultural, and tourist space for both the residents of Bodajk and visitors to the area. During the work, we carried out a comprehensive structural reinforcement, renovated the facade, restored the original stucco and parquet floors, and also restored the imposing staircase to its former glory. We modernized the mechanical systems and installed energy-efficient heating and lighting, all while taking the utmost care to preserve the building’s historic value.

The former hunting artifacts have been replaced by an interactive exhibition space, allowing visitors to learn about Hungarian hunting traditions through an immersive experience. During the park’s rehabilitation, decorative paving, walking paths, and rest areas were created, and native vegetation was reintroduced. The castle’s halls have now become venues for cultural events, conferences, and exhibitions, serving the local community in a wide range of ways. As a result of the renovation, the Bodajk hunting lodge has been brought back to life: the values of the past and the needs of the present are harmoniously united within it. The project contributed to the preservation of Bodajk’s cultural heritage, strengthened the town’s identity, and created a new tourist attraction. The reconstruction work was carried out in close collaboration, with professional rigor, and in accordance with historic preservation standards. In the future, the lodge aims to be not only a historical monument but also a vibrant community space and an inspiring meeting place. With this renovation project, we sought to set an example of how a forgotten historic monument can be put to use for the benefit of the community.
