Tisza Castle

The reconstruction of the Tisza Castle in Geszt was one of the most significant historic preservation projects in Hungary in recent years. Work began in 2021 and was completed in 2023. The goal was to restore the building’s original 19th-century appearance while also creating a modern museum and community space. As a first step, experts conducted a detailed condition assessment to identify structural defects and traces of previous alterations. In addition to restoring the castle’s facade, roof structure, and ornate interior spaces, the entire mechanical and electrical systems were also modernized. Special attention was paid to the use of sustainable materials and the implementation of energy-efficient solutions. During the project, centuries-old frescoes were discovered, which restorers carefully restored. Significant improvements were also made to the building’s surroundings: the castle garden was reconstructed based on historical sources, and new walking paths, rest areas, and a parking lot were added.

One of the biggest challenges was the poor condition of the castle, as life-threatening structural problems were discovered in several places. The procurement of period building materials and the use of original techniques earned recognition even among professional circles. The work was complicated by a tight budget, which required creative solutions that involved compromises. Access to the site posed problems mainly when transporting larger machinery, so in many cases the restoration proceeded through manual labor. Due to the castle’s historical significance, strict heritage preservation regulations had to be followed. The work was often hampered by the weather: winter frosts and spring rains forced multiple work stoppages. What made the project unique was that it succeeded in breathing new life into the castle by blending its historical past with the demands of the modern era.

Every detail was carefully attended to during the renovation, from the decorative elements and windows and doors to the sculptures in the park. The project could not have been realized without the active participation and support of the local community. At the grand opening ceremony, the castle once again became the center of the village, and its cultural and tourist appeal has significantly increased. The project serves as an example of how, while respecting traditions, we can use innovative methods to preserve our historical values for future generations in a sustainable way.
