The comprehensive renovation of József Nádor Square in Budapest was one of the city center’s flagship urban renewal projects, the centerpiece of which was a three-story underground parking garage with 525 spaces built beneath the square. The goal of the development was to expand parking capacity, eliminate surface parking spaces, and significantly improve the quality of pedestrian and public spaces.
The underground garage was equipped with state-of-the-art ventilation, fire protection, and safety systems, and also includes public restrooms, bicycle storage, a car wash, and electric vehicle chargers, thereby supporting modern urban transportation. Above ground, the square’s entire paving, green spaces, and street furniture were renovated, creating a pedestrian-friendly, orderly, and representative public space.
A unique aspect of the construction was that it was carried out in a densely built-up, high-traffic downtown environment, presenting archaeological, utility, and structural challenges. As a result of the project, József nádor Square has been transformed into a modern, livable, green, and multifunctional urban space, while the underground parking garage significantly alleviates the parking burden in District V.
