The Museum Underground Parking Garage is one of the most important elements of the City Park’s renovation and was opened in December 2020 as part of the Liget Budapest Project. The purpose of this three-story, 800-space, modern parking garage is to make City Park car-free, eliminate surface parking, and provide a convenient, sustainable transportation infrastructure for park visitors and residents of the surrounding districts.
Key technical and capacity data
3 parking levels
Capacity for 800 cars, 51 motorcycles, and 90 bicycles
24 electric charging stations (4 DC, 20 AC)
Open 24 hours a day
Accessible design: dedicated parking spaces for people with disabilities, motorcyclists, and families
The parking garage is accessible from Dózsa György Road and is well-connected to sports centers, the Nagyjátszótér, the Hungarian House of Music, the Millennium House, and offices in the area.
Artistic highlight – “underground museum”
One of the most unique features of the Museum Underground Garage is that its interior spaces are adorned with reproductions of geometric and non-figurative works by 12 prominent Hungarian artists, which both aid navigation and are considered a rarity even on a global scale.
Among the artists featured are, for example:
László Moholy-Nagy, Dóra Maurer, Ilona Keserü, Imre Bak, Victor Vasarely, Lajos Kassák, and other prominent modern masters.
This solution reflects on the historical connection between City Park and the arts, creating a visually engaging and culturally rich environment.
Environmental renewal and surface improvements
The former concrete parking lot above the underground garage has been transformed into more than 10,000 m² of green space. This is where the City Park Promenade was created, which features:
modern street furniture,
evening mood lighting,
rest areas,
a walking path, and park areas.
This development has directly contributed to improving air quality in City Park, reducing noise pollution, and creating a car-free, pedestrian-friendly environment.
Transportation and Residential Services
The garage, connected to the Liget Budapest Mobility system:
enables contactless parking via license plate recognition,
provides residential access permits for residents of Districts 6, 7, and 14,
and offers 200 designated parking spaces that residents can use free of charge between 5:00 PM and 9:00 AM.
The top level features a locked bicycle storage area, changing rooms, and showers, which is particularly beneficial for those working in the area’s office buildings.
An eco-friendly nanotechnology car wash is also in operation on-site, using cleaning agents that are 99.9% biodegradable.
