A Fortress for Honvéd, Hell for the Opposition – The Bozsik Stadium Project Update

The Bozsik József Stadium in Kispest has now reached its penultimate phase. The project is being carried out by a consortium of West Hungária Bau Kft. and Pharos ’95 Sportpályaépítő Kft., based on the designs of Óbuda Építész Stúdió Kft.

For the stadium’s foundation works, as well as for the formwork of the walls, columns and slabs of the superstructure, the contractors used PERI products in the project, which began last March.

As part of the project, a new arena is being built on the site of the former stadium, featuring a 10,000-square-metre playing field and covered stands with a capacity of 8,200 spectators.

Increasingly Spectacular Work Phases Ahead

According to our information, in the more advanced areas only the completion of painting works and furnishing remains. In the other areas, electrical and mechanical installation works have begun, while flooring works are also already under way.

In the external areas, in addition to the construction of parking spaces, grassing and planting works are also progressing continuously, while the substructures of the sports field are already being built on the pitch.

This will be followed by increasingly spectacular phases: test runs, the installation of the turf, and the graphic design of the stands in the club’s colours.

Two Special Challenges: the Curved Façade and the Railway Bridge

“During construction, one of the major challenges was the external decorative façade cladding, for which a total of 3,500 manufacturing plans had to be prepared.

The façade, curved in all directions, had to be formed with exceptional precision already during the design and construction of the reinforced concrete columns.

Only after the positioning of the columns, precise geodetic surveying and several on-site inspections could the manufacturing design, production and installation of the steel support structure and the expanded metal façade cladding begin.

A further special challenge was the construction of the railway overpass next to the stadium, which could only be carried out in close cooperation with MÁV, while maintaining continuous rail traffic.

Due to the proximity of the tracks, work could only be performed under constant supervision, and the contractors were given only one day to lift the bridge into place.

“Thanks to excellent teamwork, this was completed without any problems, exactly according to plan and with pinpoint precision,” we learned from Bálint Boros, Chief Construction Manager.

“Bozsik Is the Masterpiece I Will See Every Day”

During the project, the contractors have placed strong emphasis on maintaining contact with the supporters of the Kispest club, who will be the primary users of the facility. One of them, Tamás Márton, is directly connected to the development, as he himself is involved in the construction works, while also continuously informing the consortium about supporters’ opinions.

“Beyond the professional challenge, working on the construction of Bozsik Stadium was also an emotional matter for me,” said the founding member of Ultra Red Boys, the first organised supporters’ group in Hungary.

“I grew up in Kispest, I have supported Honvéd for as long as I can remember, I made lifelong friendships in the stands, and my family is here.

Every day, I am driven by the desire to make this arena a little more special and unique than the others — and as will be visible, we have succeeded.”

Tamás Márton emphasised that a strong team had formed on the construction site.

“Because of my connection to Kispest, this is not just one construction project among many for me. Bozsik is the masterpiece I will see every day, and I will think with pride of the people with whom we created it.

The supporters will be the heart of this stadium, and with our voices the picture will be complete: what will mean home for us will be hell for our opponents.”
