The renovation of the Main Guardhouse was also of particular importance, as the building serves as one of the historic gates and an iconic landmark of Buda Castle. In addition to restoring its original appearance, the project aimed to restore the Main Guardhouse to its former grandeur while also meeting modern functional requirements. During the work, the protection of the building’s heritage value was a primary consideration, so we carried out the structural reinforcements with particular care to ensure the long-term stability of the walls and arches. Based on archival plans and photographs, we meticulously reconstructed the facade decorations, the period-appropriate stucco, and the wrought-iron elements. We completely repaved the area in front of the building to restore its original atmosphere, while concealing modern utilities beneath the paving. We restored the main entrance gate using traditional techniques in a custom design.
Insulating the basement against moisture posed a major challenge, so we used a special injection method. In designing the interior spaces, we combined 21st-century needs with a 19th-century atmosphere: we installed a modern heating system, fire protection, and lighting technology, all of which remain invisible from the outside. During the restoration, every intervention was coordinated with the historic preservation authorities, ensuring the successful preservation of original structures, such as the staircase and the ceiling beams. Special attention was given to making the building accessible, ensuring it is now open to all visitors. The building’s functions have been expanded to include exhibition spaces, event venues, and an interactive visitor center.
A unique feature of the project is that we installed digital exhibits showcasing the castle’s history in the Guardhouse, bringing both the past and the present to life for visitors. We designed custom furniture and lighting fixtures for the interior spaces that complement the historicist style. A major challenge during the work was managing issues caused by the weather and groundwater beneath the castle, which we resolved with professional waterproofing. The building’s energy efficiency upgrade was also a priority, so we implemented exceptional thermal insulation and energy-efficient systems. Restorers meticulously restored the painted ceiling and wall decorations. During the project, we employed innovative solutions, such as laser scanning and 3D modeling, to ensure the reconstruction was as accurate as possible. With its new functions and modernized spaces, the building has become one of the central venues for cultural and community life in Buda Castle. The renovation of the Guardhouse was not merely a matter of preserving historical value, but also the creation of a new, vibrant meeting place that meaningfully connects the past with the present. This project serves as a model for historic preservation efforts in Hungary, as it prioritizes sustainability and innovation alongside respect for tradition.
