Károlyi- Csakonics Palace complex

The Károlyi-Csekonics Palace Complex is one of Budapest’s most unique historic building complexes, located at the intersection of Andrássy Avenue and Museum Boulevard. Built at the end of the 19th century, the complex once served as a home to the luxurious lifestyle of the aristocracy, but today it plays a pivotal role in the capital’s cultural and educational life. The building had been neglected for many decades and was partially unused, so it required a comprehensive historic restoration. During the renovation, we paid special attention to preserving the original architectural values: we restored the ornate facades, refurbished the stucco and staircases in a period-appropriate manner, and restored the historic interiors. During the work, we also installed modern mechanical systems and energy-efficient solutions to ensure the building meets 21st-century standards. We uniquely blended historical elements with contemporary architecture: we installed a glass roof in the inner courtyard, which provides natural light for the communal spaces.

The modern additions blend harmoniously with the original structure, allowing the building to preserve the values of the past while opening a new chapter for the present. The palace’s current function is primarily educational: it now houses a higher education institution where both students and faculty can work in an inspiring environment. As a result of the renovation, conference rooms, exhibition spaces, and communal areas have also been created, enabling a wide range of uses. We also placed great emphasis on ensuring that every part of the building is accessible. The historic renovation was particularly important, as the Károlyi-Csekonics Palace Complex is one of the jewels of Hungarian historical architecture, which we wish to preserve for future generations. The project involved exemplary collaboration among specialized designers, restorers, and contractors.

During the complex renovation of the building, we faced numerous challenges, as we had to respect its historical past while meeting today’s technological standards. The fusion of modern and classical architectural solutions helped give the palace complex a new look and restore it to its status as one of the city’s premier landmarks. The renovation took place between 2017 and 2020 and received widespread acclaim in professional circles. As a result of our work, the Károlyi-Csekonics Palace Complex won the ÉVOSZ Quality Award in 2020, which was awarded for outstanding craftsmanship, the preservation of historic values, and the exemplary application of modern solutions. This award proves that respect for the past and innovation in the present can go hand in hand in the life of a historic monument. The renovated palace is once again a vibrant community space, open not only to university students but to all residents of the capital. The renovation has succeeded in breathing new life into one of Budapest’s most impressive historic buildings and setting an example of the harmony between historic preservation and modernization.
