The Puskás Arena is the largest and most modern football stadium in Hungary, with WEST HUNGÁRIA BAU Ltd. playing a key role in its construction. The project was a major engineering endeavor on a European scale, requiring the coordinated execution of large structural elements, specialized logistical solutions, and an immense construction volume.
WHB was responsible for delivering the full structural construction works of the stadium, the scale and complexity of which clearly reflect the magnitude of the project.
Key Data
Function: National stadium and multifunctional sports and event arena
Location: Budapest
Total floor area: approximately 208,000 m²
Construction period: 2017–2019
Contractor role: WHB – structural construction works
Award: Construction Excellence Award 2020
WHB’s Main Construction Achievements and Quantities
WHB carried out the most critical, high-precision structural works of the stadium.
Total structural volumes
158,000 m³ of concrete installed
19,000 tons of reinforcing steel
140,000 m³ of earthworks
10,000 tons of roof structure
1,100 tons of steel structures installed
Assembly works carried out at heights up to 50 meters
Installation of custom precast elements weighing up to 60 tons
These figures clearly demonstrate not only the project’s scale but also WHB’s technical capacity.
Logistical and Construction Highlights
- Large-scale, continuous workforce
At the peak of the structural construction phase, 960 workers were on site daily under WHB’s management.
The project used 16 tower cranes and 6 mobile cranes, including a high-capacity 650-ton crane.
- Prefabrication and production capacity
Roof structure elements were manufactured in four different facilities.
The stadium’s unique precast concrete elements were also produced in four separate plants.
- Heavy structural lifting operations
One of the project’s highlights was the precise installation of several-ton elements at significant heights.
Installation works were carried out at heights of 40–50 meters
Millimetre-precision positioning of prefabricated elements weighing between 20 and 60 tons
Extremely precise assembly of steel structural connections
Structural and Engineering Highlights
- Long-span roof structure
WHB participated in constructing a roof system comparable to Europe’s most advanced stadiums.
Special steel ring beam system
Primary girders running continuously around the stadium over several hundred meters
Preparation for integrated lighting and security systems within the roof structure
- Grandstand structures
Thousands of prefabricated seating elements
High-precision reinforced concrete structures
Coordinated scheduling with other contractors and external systems
- Extreme precision requirements
Any millimetre deviation could have impacted
the structural performance of the roof
the alignment of the grandstands
the television broadcasting infrastructure
the acoustics
WHB applied exceptionally strict technical control procedures throughout the execution.
Electrical and related works
Although WHB’s primary focus was structural construction, the company also carried out several related preparatory works.
Preparation of structural interfaces for energy and building operation systems
Installation of cable routing and infrastructure pathways
Preparation of fire protection structural elements
Project Significance
The Puskás Arena
is the largest stadium in Hungary
hosts international matches, concerts, and major events
represents a leading European reference among 21st-century sports facilities
is one of WHB’s largest and most complex engineering projects
WHB’s contribution required a high level of technical expertise, logistical organization, and engineering capability, all of which were fundamental to the project’s success.
